Observations of Novae in the Virgo Cluster
Abstract
During 15 nights of observations in 1986 March and April the authors have detected nine novae in Virgo cluster elliptical galaxies. From six novae with reasonably well-observed light curves it is found that the distance modulus of the Virgo cluster is 6.8±0.4 (estimated error) larger than that of M31. Using a distance modulus of 24.65±0.15 for M31 then gives a Virgo cluster distance of D = 19.5±3.9 Mpc. With a cosmological redshift of 1336±54 km s-1 for the Virgo cluster this yields a value H0 = 69±14 km s-1 Mpc-1 for the Hubble parameter.
