Light protactinium isotopes have been produced with 204Pb (19F,xn) reactions. α-activities with Eα=9.90(5) MeV, T1/2=53(10) ns and Eα=9.65(5) MeV, T1/2=0.78(16) μs could be attributed to the previously unobserved nuclei 219Pa and 220Pa with the help of excitation functions. The peak cross sections for the 4n and 3n evaporation channels are on the order of 10 μb. The decay energies as well as the halflives fit well into the systematics of these nuclei close to the magic neutron number N=126. 219Pa is the shortest lived nuclide known with directly measured halflife.
