Red stars in the Fornax dwarf galaxy.
Abstract
Positions and finding charts are given for 47 carbon stars, 30 M stars and 1 S star identified in the field of the Fornax dwarf galaxy, together with photographic magnitudes and colours, V and B-V. Bolometric magnitudes are derived for the carbon stars. Fitting the luminosity function of these stars to the one for carbon stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud confirms practically the presently used modulus for the Fornax dwarf galaxy of m-M = 21.0. A finding chart is given for 245 red stars in an area of 110 square minutes of arc in the center of the galaxy. Magnitudes, V, and colours, B-V, could be measured for 231 of them. The area is very rich in carbon stars. There are indications in its colour-magnitude diagram of a lower metal content than in previously investigated outer regions.
