Introduction to the theory of deterministic chaos
Abstract
The theory of deterministic chaos is introduced with a view to astrophysics applications. The emphasis is on the treatment of continuous systems. Deterministic chaos stands for a class of processes the development of which can be described by deterministic difference or differential equations, but which are characterized by a chaotic time behavior. The experimental characterization of chaos, and chaos and systems theory are explained. Chaos in discrete systems, chaos in continuous systems, and the quantitative characterization of attractors are presented.
