What can we learn from nuclear engineering safety?
Abstract
Nuclear engineering safety studies are reviewed. A large part of the research is useful also for other engineering fields: for example nucleation, critical flow, flow pattern, freezing. Unsolved problems are linked to basic understanding of interfacial transfer phenomena, turbulence, and surface chemistry, for example critical flow, flow pattern, nucleation superheat. The development of large systems codes is not optimized, since exercises show that the increase in prediction accuracy is small with respect to the increase in complexity.
