The feasibility of applying the surface layer activation technique to highly precise measurements of wear or corrosion is assessed. Various methods of radionuclide-marker activation are tested to produce activity distributions with the necessary characteristics in the nanometer range. The thin film and recoil implantation methods are found to be the least expensive; they may lead to a significant reduction in cost over direct particle beam bombardment for some materials.
