A high quality multit-pulse LPC coder for speech transmission below 16 KBPS
Abstract
This paper describes a new approach to low bit rate speech coding below 16 kbps. A basic algorithm for multi-pulse coding and its improvement by utilizing a pitch structure in the voice are explained. Hardware realization for the coding is described. Coding performances are evaluated objectively and subjectively. The introduction of pitch prediction into the coder shows a 2-3 dB SNR improvement at the transmission bit rate above 8kbps, and a perceptually annoying noise is reduced. Pitch interpolation results in a sufficiently natural speech quality for communications at around 4.8kb/s.
