Optimal colors, phosphors, and illuminant characteristics for CRT displays - The algorithm approach
Abstract
A new strategy for the determination of optimal colors, phosphors, and surrounding ambients for CRT displays is outlined: the algorithmic approach. This approach enables the display manufacturer and the designer of dispaly layouts to compute sets of highly contrasting colors that optimally implement both the possibilities of the CRT device and the findings from vision and human factors research. The resulting COLSET algorithm is the first one to estimate simultaneously the parameter sets related to the phosphor luminances, the phosphor chromaticities, and the chromaticity of an additional illuminant. COLSET is also the first method that allows for a restricted optimization of these parameters. A number of pilot applications illustrate the possibilities of the algorithm and compare the method with existing approaches. Guidelines are presented for the implementation of the algorithmic approach in research and applied settings.
