Heating Mechanisms of the Solar Corona
Abstract
Several mechanisms proposed for the heating of the solar corona are reviewed. After briefly going through the classical acoustic heating theory, magnetic heating mechanisms are discussed. These are divided into two categories depending on the ratio between the two time scales: τA (the magnetic response time of coronal loops) and τc (the time scale of convective motion on the photosphere). A special attention is paid to the heating by Alfvén waves undergoing a phase mixing.
