The response of the global atmosphere to the extraordinary El Nino sea surface temperature anomaly in January 1983: Simulation
Abstract
The effect of the sea surface temperature anomalies occuring during El Nino phenomena on atmospheric circulation anomalies was investigated using a simulation calculation with a circulation model. The simulated response agrees well with the atmospheric anomalies observed in 1983. The control circulation experiment consists of 4 simulation calculations and is integrated over 10 yr. The tropical El Nino signal and the extratropical response (Northern Hemisphere; 500 mbar topography) are described.
