Analysis of compressiblefreeshearlayer instabilities in jets of arbitrary cross section
Abstract
Compressiblefreeshearlayer instabilities in jets of arbitrary mean flow profile are investigated by means of an integralequation formulation of linear stability theory. Numerical results are presented for the fundamental instability modes (those with minimal pressure variation with azimuth) of round and elliptic jets for Mach numbers 0, 1/2, and 1. Despite the apparent reliability of the calculations, substantial computer time is required. Hence, an alternative calculational scheme which involves both integral and differential equations is currently under investigation.
