A review of some flow visualization experiments carried out at the Institut Franco-Allemand de Recherches (ISL) shock tubes
Abstract
Differential interferometry, tracer particle density visualization by light scattering technique, and Doppler-pictures of the velocity distribution of the tracer particles are reviewed. If certain assumptions concerning the tracers are fulfilled, then the tracer particle density distribution and the tracer velocity distribution can be related to gas density and flow velocity, respectively. Gas jets coming out of a nozzle situated at the end of the shock tube; vortex production behind a sharp edge; vortex and pressure wave formation at trailing edges; and internal flows behind pistons are described.
