Bifurcation analysis of the transverse drift-wave-envelope instability
Abstract
One-dimensionally localized and longitudinally stable wave packets of drift waves are considered. The two-dimensional saturation of an always occurring transverse instability is calculated by a bifurcation analysis and leads to two-dimensionally localized vortices. The latter do not show a collapse. It is supposed that this process is a generation mechanism of stable vortices in inhomogeneous plasmas.
