a Comparison of Proton-Proton and Proton-Antiproton Interactions at the CERN ISR.
Abstract
A comparison of pp and pp interactions is made with data taken using the R608 forward spectrometer at the CERN ISR. The pp elastic scattering differential cross sections are measured, and compared to the pp differential cross sections at SQRT.(s) = 53 GeV, and in the momentum transfer range 0.6 < t < 2.1 GeV('2) where the pp cross sections exhibit a dip structure. The pp differential cross section at the center of the dip is 1.5(sigma) above the pp cross section indicating that the dip may not exist in pp scattering. Single particle p(,1) distributions, resonance production, and charged track multiplicities are then compared in the proton fragmentation region of pp and pp interactions. These distributions are identical within the systematic, and statistical uncertainties of the experiment as expected from Charge Conjugation Invariance and Arm-Arm Factorization. It is then shown that Factorization breaks down in the case of high x(,F)(DELTA)('++)(1236) and (LAMDA)('0)s. This result is discussed in terms of simple qq annihilation and quark counting, and in terms of single meson exchange. Finally a measurement of the product of the (')(LAMDA) polarization and the (')(LAMDA) asymmetry constant ((alpha)(,(,(LAMDA)))P(,(,(LAMDA)))) was made and shown to be opposite to that of the (LAMDA)('0). It is argued that because of dominant Charge Conjugation Invariance, and Arm-Arm Factorization, the Polarization of the (')(LAMDA) should be the same as that for the (LAMDA), and therefore, the (')(LAMDA) asymmetry is opposite that of the (LAMDA) as expected from CP invariance in (LAMDA) decay.
