A search for the CO line emission toward two clumpy irregular galaxies, Markarian 8 and 297.
Abstract
A deep search for the 12CO line emission at 2.6 mm (J = 1-0) was made of two clumpy irregular galaxies using the 45-m telescope at Nobeyama. Upper limits to the column density of CO molecules of 1.3×1017cm-2 and 1.1×1017cm-2 were obtained toward the most active regions in Markarian 8 and 297, respectively. The ratio of CO mass to H I mass in these galaxies is about a factor of 5 smaller than that for our Galaxy. The quantities are compared with those for the star-bursting galaxy M82.
