Recent developments in the study of strong ionizing events distributed along α particle tracks ( Eα ⩽ 13.6 MeV) recorded in dense media
Abstract
Further experimental results on strong ionizing events (SIE) distributed along medium energy α particle trajectories recorded in nuclear emulsions will be outlined, notably the influence of the detector composition on the production of SIEs as well as on the contribution of these events to the energy loss of the primary. On the basis of the hypothesis that part of the SIEs are short tracks of H, C, N and O recoils, the production of the protons ejected in α → p collision-cascades in gelatin has been estimated, and the contribution to the energy loss of α particles by scattering on H- and C- nuclei, calculated by means of an optical model code where the nuclear potential is taken into account, has been compared with the corresponding energy loss due to Coulombian interactions only.
