Laser emission pressure on atoms
Abstract
The theory of the motion of atomic particles under the effect of the pressure of resonant laser emission is presented, and applications of resonant light pressure in experimental physics are examined. Fundamental relationships for the radiation force acting on atomic particles in the field of resonant radiation are presented; the characteristics of light pressure are discussed for fields of different spatial-temporal structures. The discussion also covers a systematic quantum-statistical theory of the motion of atomic particles in resonant light fields and results of experiments on the control of the motion of atoms and atomic ions by laser emission pressure. Some applications of cold atoms and ions in nuclear physics and spectroscopy are mentioned.
