Impact of bodies on and their penetration into fluids
Abstract
Transition phenomena accompanying the impact of solid bodies on fluid surfaces (i.e., high-velocity impact and the subsequent initial period of penetration into the fluid) are examined. Analytical and numerical methods for the investigation of this interaction are examined in a review of examples from the published literature. The case of an ideal incompressible fluid is considered first, with subsequent attention given to the impact of rigid and elastic bodies on ideal compressible fluids. Finally, analytical and numerical solutions are given to the problem of high-velocity impact on a plastically compressible fluid (a soil model).
