Asymptotic modelling of flows - General features
Abstract
A review of the role of asymptotic modeling in research on Newtonian flows is presented, and issues involving the relationship of asymptotic modeling with numerical simulation are considered. Cases where asymptotic modeling may provide a guide for devising numerical codes are examined. Methods for finding the small parameter occurring in the mathematical problem deriving from the modeled physical phenomenon are considered. The application of asymptotic modeling to various fluid mechanical problems including vortex flows in rotating machines, rolled vortex sheets, hydrodynamic stability and atmospheric flows is also discussed.
