Recoil in electromagnetic railguns
Abstract
A basic qualitative analysis is carried out of the circuit of a railgun to show that recoil forces will appear wherever a railgun is closed electromagnetically. The current path is traced to identify the power supply leads, switches and power supply components at the recoil locations, which must be designed to support the resultant loads. It is noted that incorporation of the stator of a compulsator will cause the recoil forces to emerge as a lateral force at the base of the compulsator, which would reduce the overturning moment of a compulsator-driven railgun mounted on a moving vehicle.
