The electric field behaviour in the magnetosphere at 6.6 RE in an active region during a substorm.
Abstract
GEOS-2 data on the electric field at 6.6 earth radii near the equatorial plane at the western part of the current wedge of a substorm are analyzed. It is shown that the observed change in the direction of the azimuthal component E sub D of the quasi-static electric field is connected with flux fronts of high-energy protons. Charge signs in places of E sub D direction reversal coincide with the pattern of polarization fields arising on density gradients in the magnetosphere.
