Recognition of irregularities due to meteors and the sporadic E layer
Abstract
Data from eight midlatitude radio paths at frequencies of 15-44 MHz are used to establish duration-of-existence criteria for distinguishing radio echoes due to meteors from those due to the sporadic E layer. The effect of recognition errors on the calculation of the fill factor is assessed. The proposed criterion is discussed in relation to the probability of occurrence of the sporadic E layer.
