Transient electrodynamical characteristics of the high-latitude ionosphere.
Abstract
The motions and currents generated in the high-latitude ionosphere when an external electric field is turned on instantaneously are examined with allowance for the ion entrainment of the neutrals. The analysis yields transient characteristics which make it possible to calculate the response of the ionosphere to changes in the magnetospheric electric field occurring arbitrarily with time. It is shown that ion entrainment of the neutrals produces significant changes in the conducting properties of the ionosphere at all height levels.
