Practical means of cancelling the differential phase contribution to rain crosspolarization at 10 GHz and above
Abstract
It is shown that fixed differential phase shift (DPS) polarizers with only one rotatable section can be made to closely approximate the effect of a variable DPS polarizer with fixed principal planes, up to some finite DPS value, in reducing rain-induced cross-polarization in dual-polarized 14/11 and 14/12 GHz satellite systems to an acceptable level. The transformations are similar only for initial polarizations in a small neighborhood of some specified polarization. The method described can be reduced to only one fixed and one rotating section if a fixed OMT rotation is acceptable.
