Japanese Halley Missions with Sakigake and Suisei
Abstract
Two Japanese spacecraft, MS-T5 and Planet-A, have been launched into interplanetary space with the aim of encountering Comet Halley. The encounters will be March 9 and 11, 1986, for Planet-A and MS-T5, respectively. The planned trajectories of the two spacecraft are given in Figure 1. These spacecraft will join the other ships of the so-called Halley observation “fleet,” including the two VEGA craft, ICE, and European Space Agency's Giotto spacecraft. Together, the Japanese spacecraft will carry a total of five instruments.
