Critical amplitudes of the Tollmien-Schlichting waves
Abstract
A study is made of a model of the linear spatial evolution of perturbations introduced into a boundary layer. The undisturbed flow is considered using a locally parallel approximation and specified by a longitudinal velocity component profile; the introduced perturbations are treated as superpositions of two-dimensional and three-dimensional waves of certain frequency. Differential equations describing the spatial evolution of the wave amplitudes are determined as asymptotic expansions in a small parameter characterizing the intensity of the introduced perturbations. Results of the numerical integration of the amplitude equations are presented for various initial values.
