Optimal quantizers for complex circular normal random variables with unknown variance
Abstract
The problem of the digitization of the coherent radar echos from natural surfaces leads to the task of the quantization of complex circular normal random quantities with unknown variance. Echos of the type considered are obtained in the case of earth observation operations conducted with the aid of radar. A random quantity with unknown variance represents a random quantity with a standard deviation which lies in an interval with known finite limits. The quantization of a quantity involves the replacement of the quantity by a finite number of discrete values. Attention is given to selected quantizers, quantization errors, and optimal quantizers. The conducted analysis shows that, in general, polar quantizers are superior to Cartesian quantizers.
