Models of Axisymmetric Galaxies
Abstract
A method for the construction of models of axisymmetric galaxies is developed. In this formulation, a mass density and the corresponding gravitational potential are given, and a numerical solution for the distribution function is determined. The method applies to potentials in which the stellar motions admit of three isolating integrals. The method is illustrated with the construction of the 'perfect' oblate-spheroidal galaxy. The solution for the distribution function is not unique, and various solutions are determined. Rotation curves and velocity ellipsoids are presented. It is found that the models have a peak-rotational velocity that is consistent with those of observed elliptical galaxies.
