Probing the atmosphere with radar
Abstract
The novel radar system designated 'Capsonde' employs a sophisticated Doppler probe with a phased array to obtain continuous monitoring of wind speed and direction at altitude intervals of as little as 75 m. Capsonde arrays, scattered throughout the country, could furnish major improvements in the quality of both local and national weather predictions. In addition to furnishing average wind velocity figures for each altitude, Capsonde yields a turbulence reading based on the variability and ratio of variability of wind velocity.
