High-resolution observations of the intergalactic HI cloud in the M 96 group.
Abstract
The large cloud complex of intergalactic H I in the M96 group has been observed with the D array of the Very Large Array. The main cloud has been resolved into a number of clumps which account for most of the H I previously detected at Arecibo. Additionally, high-resolution spectra have been made at Arecibo that show evidence of narrower subcomponents within the ≡30 - 50 km s-1 wide H I profiles previously found at Arecibo. In general, the kinematics of the gas follow the overall pattern found in the original observations, but there are some indications that the clumps may be dynamically independent.
