Spate Galaxien. Die Sternentstehungsraten.
Abstract
An extremely simple method for the determination of star formation rates in external galaxies is presented. It is based on surface photometry in one colour only. Applying a new image filtering technique the intensity distributions of 59 late-type spiral and irregular galaxies have been devided into two components each, one containing the light of the smoothly distributed old disk population, the other one containing the light of the clumped extreme population I. This allows the determination of the ratios R1/>R< between the "present" star formation rates (for stars with ages T < 50×106years) and the average star formation rates. If the assumption of a constant Initial Mass Function is valid the results confirm the very high present star formation rates obtained by Kennicutt (1983) and Gallagher et al. (1984).
