A detailed kinematic and abundance analysis of old disk giants.
Abstract
Prompted by the work of various investigators (Lambert and Ries, 1981; Kjaergaard et al., 1982) the authors have undertaken a semiautomated detailed spectroscopic analysis of a relatively large (34) sample of evolved high-velocity giant stars (metal-poor members of the disk population). CNO and overall metal abundances, as well as the 12C/13C ratio, were derived. The conclusions of both the above papers were confirmed and extended, namely that for old disk giants the C/N ratios have approximately the solar ratio and the O/Fe ratio is enhanced relative to the sun. The evolutionary consequences of these more detailed results in terms of the kinematic, mass and convective mixing characteristics of these objects are discussed.
