Experimental studies of high Reynolds number backward-facing step flow
Abstract
The present paper provides experimental results of the mean flow properties, turbulence intensities, Reynolds shear stress, and other turbulence properties for the high Reynolds number flow over a two-dimensional backward-facing step. To obtain the high Reynolds number flow, a special test section had to be set up and this is described in the report together with the two-dimensional LDA-equipment employed to perform the measurements. Results are presented for an expansion ratio of 1:2 providing pressure coefficient measurements and results of the shape of the recirculating flow region, also showing the development length as a function of Reynolds number. Local velocity information for high Reynolds number flow is provided, it is suggested that the results obtained be employed to test existing prediction procedures for turbulent separated flows.
