Advanced data handling subsystem for the Hipparcos satellite
Abstract
The mission goals and hardware specifications of the on-board data handling subsystem (DHSS) for the Hipparcos satellite are outlined. The spacecraft will be used to gather astrometric data on 100,000 stars from a GEO orbit position. The 2.5 yr mission lifetime of the satellite is to begin in 1988. The DHSS furnishes an uplink for receiving a catalog of stars to observe and a downlink carrying the raw data and attitude data for analysis in an equation with 500,000 unknowns. On-board processing must handle the uplink protocol, the incoming Star File, instrument pointing, and attitude calculations in real time. The DHSS consists of a decoder, the central terminal, and two remote terminal units on plug-in boards and a dc/ac converter. The subsystem is based on the SPOT on-board computer and the TV-SAT/TDF-1 DHSS.
