DBS front-end in the 12 GHz band
Abstract
A 12-GHz front-end has been designed and developed using only GaAs MESFETs, with the exception of the IF postamplifier. Two versions of the front-end have been developed in order to obtain 4 and 6 dB noise with 40-dB minimum gain. Furthermore, two versions of the active mixer have been developed, one using a GaAs single-gate FET and the other using a GaAs dual-gate FET (DGFET). Additionally a design aid has been developed for the characterization of the nonlinearities and the calculation of the theoretical conversion gain of the DGFET mixer. The calculation of available conversion gain versus local oscillator power has been performed by the application of the device (Z) matrix with linearized harmonic terms. All these analyses and the experimental results obtained for the subsystems and the whole front-end are shown.
