Scientific Atlanta B-MAC system
Abstract
The design and operation of a customized-chip B-MAC baseband processor for DBS or FS TV reception are described. The fundamental principles and inherent difficulties of FM TV transmission from satellites are reviewed; the advantages offered by the MAC solution of these problems are explained; and the economic need for scrambling or encryption of DBS signals is indicated. The present system uses the same chip set for MAC decoding, decryption/unscrambling, and addressing and provides either RGB or PAL video with teletext, six channels of Dolby-enhanced delta-mod audio, and utility data at 62.5 and 9.6 kB kb/s. The use of a menu-type viewer/system interface for a pay-per-view DBS system is illustrated.
