Direct broadcasting from satellite - Is transparency the only approach to satellite repeaters?
Abstract
The paper reviews some DBS system requirements having strong relation-ships with the satellite repeater configuration, with particular reference to feeder links, satellite-emissions spectral control, flexibility of operation, reliability vs. operational aspects, and satellite-hardware performance. Conventional transparent satellite repeaters - now baselined for the totality of DBS systems under development - are compared to nontransparent repeaters implementing signal demodulation and remodulation on board, attempting to identify where nontransparency might be advantageously used, as well as the areas worthy of further investigation and analysis, from both system and technology viewpoint.
