Sound and TV broadcasting by satellite in developing countries
Abstract
The use of satellites to provide TV and sound broadcasting to large developing countries is discussed, surveying the available technology. The WARC-BS-77 regulations regarding channel distribution frequency and polarization assignments, and EIRP are summarized; European-designed DBS systems currently in operation or being developed are characterized (Arabsat, Eutelsat, TV-SAT/TDF1, Olympus, Sarit, and Eurostar); and two approaches (based on 4-kW Olympus and 2-kW Sarit configurations) to DBS TV and sound distribution to Egypt and the Sudan are described. A map showing the WARC-BS-77 coverage areas for Egypt and the Sudan and photographs of typical DBS ground-reception antennas are included.
