Technical and economic optimization of the DBS system in Italy
Abstract
The technological alternatives being considered for the Italian DBS-TV program for the period 1987-2000 are discussed, with a focus on the space segment. Plans call for an Olympus satellite with two channels in 1987, followed by two three-channel and then three five-channel Sarit (Satellite di radiodiffusione itallano) satellites; configurations based on the Olympus, Italsat, and ECS-P platforms are compared. The most promising Sarit system is considered to be a multimission spacecraft combining DBS-TV, teleconferencing, and datalink channels and having weight and power requirements compatible with the Olympus platform. The total investment cost of such a program is estimated as 1.165 x 10 to the 12th 1984 lire.
