Advanced on-board processing satellite system concepts
Abstract
Repeater systems for ESA communication satellites are described. The systems feature satellite switched TDMA to exploit multiple beams; on-board regeneration to improve TDMA time-plan efficiency; on-board bit-rate conversion to reduce Earth station transmitter power; beam hopping to serve low-traffic beams economically; and time-stages on-board to permit demand assignment. The Agency is concentrating on the development of on-board demodulators and a TST switching system. A payload with the full range of facilities to allow experimenters to run trials of simple and complex on-board-processing systems is proposed.
