ESA's future plans in the field of satellite telecommunications
Abstract
The European Space Agency's plans for applications of communications satellites for implementation in the 1990s are outlined. The most promising among these are satellites featuring multibeam phased-array antennas for maritime/aeronautical services in the Atlantic Ocean region and for land mobile services in Western Europe, satellites with on-board TST switching and multiple-bit-rate conversion capability for use in fixed services, and satellites with reconfigurable payloads for direct broadcasting and distribution to cable networks. The program comprises three phases: system definition and design, development of laboratory models as proofs of concepts, and full-scale demonstrations based on in-orbit flights.
