Laser versus vapor phase soldering
Abstract
This paper details the initial evaluation of laser-versus-vapor phase soldering systems. The evaluation includes (1) laser type selection between the CO2 laser and Nd:YAG laser; (2) metallurgical stability of the solder joint produced with each reflow system; and (3) the processing advantages and disadvantages of laser and vapor-phase systems. The results show that both processes have their applications. However, due to the end product reliability afforded by the Nd:YAG laser, this soldering process will continue to increase in usage.
