Getting more by taking less - A method of summing up pixels on a CCD imager
Abstract
The Halley multicolor camera (HMC) CCD sensors aboard Giotto are described. A new supplementary circuitry adapted to the special form of the HMC CCD output amplifier reduces the readout noise. Because the data link between the spacecraft and earth can handle only 2 percent of the optical data, pixel summation is used to reduce the science data stream rate. The generation of superpixels is described, and a comparison between pixel-by-pixel readout and on-chip summed superpixels is presented.
