Performance and reliability of third-generation image intensifiers
Abstract
The performance currently obtainable with third-generation image intensifiers and their reliability characteristics are examined, with particular attention given to the trade-offs that had to be made in respect of performance in order to achieve satisfactory reliability. It is noted that the key factor in achieving high stability, operational reliability, and meeting bright source protection requirements has been the thin film deposited at the input of the microchannel plate (MCP). The noise figure of filmed MCP is decreased by funneling the input and by depositing a material of high secondary emission (MgO) into the MCP.
