Fluid slosh studies for spinning spacecraft
Abstract
An approximate method for calculation of sloshing modes in a spinning container is outlined. An eigenvalue problem for the essential modes is obtained by assuming that liquid velocity can be represented as a combination of known admissible flows, either irrotational or rotational with uniform vorticity. A test facility for fluid slosh investigation is presented. Model tanks are subjected to a forced precession motion by two driven tables, and slosh moment exerted by liquid is measured by quartz load washers. This moment allows spacecraft divergence rate to be estimated. Test results for cylindrical tanks with hemispherical ends clearly show liquid resonances and prove very encouraging.
