Spectroscopic investigation of materials for tunable infrared lasers
Abstract
The research involves the crystal growth, optical spectroscopy, and laser measurements related to the evaluation of new materials for tunable solid state lasers. The work focused on 4d and 5d transition metal ions with additional work done on 3d transition metal ions in a variety of different host crystals. Some of the results of major importance from this work are: (1) techniques were developed for the growth of crystals with 4d and 5d transition metals as dopant ions; (2) techniques were developed to vary the relative amount of d-d fluorescence emission compared to charge transfer emission; and (3) tunable stimulated emission was obtained from RbCaF3: Rh2+ crystals.
