Effect of asymmetry on the output characteristics of an unstable optical resonator
Abstract
An analysis is made of the behavior of the output characteristics of fast-flow gas-discharge and gasdynamic CO2 lasers as the symmetry position of the unstable resonator is varied. It is shown for both systems studied that asymmetric configurations of an unstable resonator with an optical axis passing near the edge of the mirrors can have definite advantages over the symmetric configuration. These advantages are a better radiation directivity and a higher pump-energy conversion efficiency.
