Ground segment concept for a data relay satellite, phase 1
Abstract
The functions and the architecture of a ground segment operating a European data relay system were defined, assuming that ESOC facilities located at Darmstadt (West Germany) are reused. The retained scheme is based on a centralized concept, where all the data transit (forward and return) to the data relay satellite is centralized by the ground segment. The main problems are: implementation of the diversity at the ground station (required in Ka band by link availability requirements); as the existing (and foreseen) communication networks are not adapted to the high rate data flow dissemination, the real time dissemination of such data pose a problem which was not solved.
