Decay of rotating wakes from a mixed-flow impeller
Abstract
The wakes shed by the rotor blades of a mixed-flow turbomachine have been investigated using a laser-Doppler anemometer. All three components of mean velocity have been mapped in the three-dimensional reference frame of the rotating impeller, at differing flow rates. This paper describes the behavior of wakes which are formed at the trailing edge of blade sections with thin boundary layers and no large separated regions. Attention is focussed on two features of this behavior; the decay of the wakes in an unbladed region downstream of the rotor, and the interaction of the residual wakes with the stator blade row which follows.
