Day-to-day variability in foF2 at low latitudes over a solar cycle
Abstract
The monthly medians of F-region parameters in HF Communications are predictable to a reasonably good level of accuracy for a given place, season and solar activity. However, the extent of rather larger apparently random variations around the medium parameters deteriorate the quality of communications unless quantified in advance and compensated for. Coefficients of variation indicating the extent of such variability are calculated for a low latitude station in a number of relevant parameters over a complete solar cycle which show that the decaying phase of the cycle suffers from larger variability compared to the growing phase, especially for noon values. For Ahmedabad, a station at the anomaly peak the diurnal maximum shows smaller variability near the peak of the cycle. The variability in 10.7 cm flux is greater around the solar maximum but has little correlation with f0F2 variability.
